Leptospirosis at human-animal-environment interfaces in Latin-America: drivers, prevention, and control measures

Leptospirosis is one of the main re-emerging zoonotic diseases with a worldwide distribution, mainly in regions hot or tropical climates. It caused by spirochetal bacteria genus Leptospira, which, their pathogenic life forms, causes asymptomatic to severe infections humans and animals. Animal-to-human transmission occurs most frequently occupationally exposed groups travelers. However, leptospirosis also represents disease associated poverty low sanitation environments, rural urban communities, close contact companion animals livestock. A search was performed PubMed, Scopus, Web Science Google scholar databases using query terms related Leptospira/leptospirosis, reported during 1990-2020. This review focuses on description biologic socioenvironmental drivers that influence occurrence humans. found at human-animal-environment interfaces, challenge for public animal health, food production; hence, improving strategies prevention control surveillance Latin-American countries critical, as affected disease.
